Network Security Engineer (Palo Alto)

Location: Calgary, AB (Hybrid)
Contract: Minimum 6 Months

Overview

We're looking for an experienced Network Security Engineer with strong Palo Alto expertise to support enterprise network security initiatives. You'll play a key role in optimizing firewall configurations, improving security posture, and implementing firewall best practices across a complex enterprise environment.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on engineering, firewall governance, and working closely with infrastructure and security teams.

Responsibilities

• Review and optimize Palo Alto firewall rule sets
• Identify redundant, unused, and overly permissive firewall rules
• Design and implement least-privilege firewall policies
• Analyze network traffic to validate firewall changes
• Perform firewall rule recertification and governance activities
• Document current and future-state firewall policies
• Collaborate with infrastructure, networking, and security teams
• Support testing, validation, and rollback planning for firewall changes
• Ensure firewall configurations align with internal security standards and compliance requirements

Required Experience

• Strong hands-on experience with Palo Alto Networks firewalls (PAN-OS)
• Proven experience with firewall rule cleanup, optimization, and governance
• Experience using Panorama or similar firewall management platforms
• Strong understanding of least privilege, network segmentation, and Zero Trust principles
• Solid knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, and enterprise networking
• Experience implementing application-aware firewall policies
• Strong documentation and change management skills
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills

Preferred Experience

• Google Cloud Platform (GCP) networking and security
• Hybrid cloud networking
• Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or similar)
• Knowledge of ISO 27001, NIST, or similar security frameworks
